You probably want to know what is the most important factor when you choose thermal imagers, thermal cameras? It is thermal FPA detector’s resolution. Why thermal FPA detector’s resolution is the most important factor when you choose thermal imagers, thermal cameras?
1ST: A thermal detector’s resolution is the first element in determining a thermal camera’s ability to generate a high-quality image. The more detector pixels a detector has, the higher its resolution, therefore the more energy will be gathered, and the more detail you’ll be able to see in the image. Higher resolution thermal cameras can detect smaller objects from farther away. For more detailed images, you need more detector pixels focused on the target. That's why it's important to know the detector resolution or number of detector pixels on the infrared camera. Each pixel detects the apparent temperature measurement of an area of the target. All else being equal, you can get a more detailed image with a camera that has more detector pixels.

Higher resolution thermal cameras often have a 640×480 thermal detector, which delivers 307,200 pixels, comparing that to 110,592 pixels in a thermal imager with a 384×288 detector. Now in the market the highest resolution cameras have 1024×768 (786,432 pixels), but it is too expensive.MH's thermal module, thermal core, thermal cameras adopts different resolution detector as clients' requirement.

THERMAL DETECTOR WITH DIFFERENT RESOLUTION

Above, all about the detector’s resolution, now you may wonder what the significance of thermal detector’s pixel size?
2nd: Pixel pitch or pixel size is the distance between the centers of two pixels of a microbolometer. In thermal imaging sensors, it is measured in microns (µm),normally it is 12µm and 17µm. Smaller pixel sizes are better— the smaller the pitch, the more detail you’ll see.

Below is example to confirm which detector is better:

1.     Detector A: resolution is 384*288, pixel pitch 17µm; Detector B: resolution is 640*480, pixel pitch 17µm.

Detector B is better than A detector, Detector  B is more expensive than detector A

2.    Detector C: resolution is 640*480, pixel pitch 17µm; Detector D: resolution is 640*480, pixel pitch 12µm.

Detector D is better than D detector, Detector D is more expensive than detector C.
