ONE OF THE coolest things about infrared cameras is that you can point them at a scene and get a visual image of how hot or cold things are. So … what if those things are humans? Could you use an IR camera, for instance, to check people at an airplane gate for possible Covid-19 fevers?

 

On the plus side, it wouldn’t require any physical contact, and you get an almost instantaneous reading.

 

 IR camera could be used to screen for individuals with elevated body temperatures. Of course that doesn’t necessarily mean they have Covid-19. Maybe they have an ordinary flu. Maybe they’re hot from running to catch a flight. 

 

Does that mean it's pointless? No, it's a screen, not a diagnostic test. It’s not perfect, but it could be a quick, inexpensive, noninvasive way of surveying large groups of people and, at the least, flagging those with a higher probability of being infected for follow-up questioning.
