How to choose a good night vision device?

To choose the right night vision binoculars, the first question to ask yourself is “What am I going to use them for?”

The second question is “How much do I want to spend on them?”

These are the two most important questions for any selection of night vision equipment - since they will let you realize if your budget is realistic, or whether you need to reconsider.

Night vision works by either using IR light that most people and animals can’t see very well, or by using the available light in the sky, such as starlight and airglow.

You’ve probably heard about Generations. There are Digital, Gen1 and Gen3 as the only real practical solutions in the US.

Gen1 is good for kids, moonlight nights and seeing a bit better after you’ve come out from a well lit house into relative darkness. It’s not much good if there’s not a lot of moonlight, and if there’s no moon, forget it.

Digital is just like Gen1. The advantages are that it isn’t damaged by use in the daylight. The disadvantages are resolution and batteries, which it goes through like a drunk sucking booze.

Gen3. Gen2 is closer to Gen3 than Gen1, mentioned earlier make Super-Gen2 - or in other words, Gen2 that performs like ( and in some cases can outperform ) Gen3.

Gen1 is next to useless - you can see better with your eyes when it gets really dark - and Gen3 is pretty amazing.
