In 1945, the U.S. military landed on Okinawa and gained the advantage of night combat with night vision goggles, successfully killing a large number of Japanese troops. Since then, the figure of the night vision device has appeared in the battle many times, and made great contributions to the victory of the World Anti-Fascist War.

 

How does night vision allow people to spot enemies hidden in the dark? The active infrared night vision device adopts an active attack strategy. It uses an infrared searchlight to emit infrared rays, and the infrared rays will be reflected back immediately when they touch a target far away. The infrared image tube converts invisible infrared images into electronic images visible to the naked eye through electrical energy processing, so that people can observe the target situation hundreds of meters away through the screen.

 

According to the power of the infrared searchlight, the observed range is also different. This kind of night vision device has low cost and mature technology, so it was popular in the early days. But it has a fatal weakness. It has to actively emit infrared rays, so it is easy to be discovered by the enemy's infrared detectors, and then expose itself. With the development of human night vision technology, this kind of night vision device has been gradually replaced.

 

In order to get rid of the defect that the active infrared night vision device is easy to expose, people are more actively researching the new night vision device. The low-light night vision device came into being. In 1962, the United States first developed the first-generation low-light night vision device and applied it to the Vietnam War.

 

The core technology of the low-light night vision device is the low-light enhancement technology, and the core component is the image intensifier. At night, especially in the wild without lights, although we can't see things clearly, we can still see the general outline of things. , which we call Night Shimmer.

These weak lights reflect weaker light on the object, which is difficult for the human eye to see, but the low-light night vision device can use an image intensifier to increase the reflected light to hundreds of thousands of times, so that it can be seen by the naked eye. It does not need to emit infrared rays, which is naturally safer than active infrared night vision devices, and it is small in size, light in weight, and consumes less power. But it also has shortcomings: because its working principle is to enhance low light, it is greatly affected by climatic conditions, and it is not effective in cloudy, smoke, fog, darkness and other environments.

 

In fact, people pursue more perfect inventions almost all the time, so they do not hesitate to try many times, using different principles and materials to achieve the same results. As early as the beginning of the 20th century, people were studying thermal imaging technology. In 1959, the University of Chicago developed the first forward-looking infrared thermal imager. By the 1970s, portable thermal imagers first appeared in the military field.

 

The so-called thermal imager is to realize the reception, conversion and imaging of infrared rays. Its working principle is that all objects with a temperature higher than absolute zero (-273.15°C) will actively radiate infrared rays, and the higher the temperature, the stronger the infrared rays radiated. Therefore, the thermal imager can perfectly capture everything that radiates infrared rays, and can see through the camouflage. It has strong concealment and is not affected by climate and time. It is the most advanced night vision instrument in the world. Although the image of the thermal imager is not very clear, with the development of science and technology, the thermal imager will inevitably become more perfect.
